We welcome students from all over the world to study English for 2 – 7 weeks (2 July 2012 - 17 August 2012). Start dates are 2 July, 16 July and 30 July.
Your level of English will be tested on your first day.
All students choose from one of the following programmes:
General English (20 hours per week)
Suitable for students of all levels from Elementary to Advanced, this course is designed to help you increase your confidence in using English and practise language skills in a variety of everyday situations. In the first half of the morning class you will activate and extend your knowledge of vocabulary and grammar using a course book at a level appropriate to you. In the second half of the lesson the emphasis is on developing communicative skills using a variety of up-to-date and authentic materials. You will have plenty of opportunities to interact and communicate in English with your qualified, experienced teacher and with students from other countries. All materials are provided for you in class.
Intensive English (24 hours per week)
Students following this programme combine 20 hours of General English (as above) with an additional 4 hours of study, choosing from either English and Culture or Examination Preparation.
English and Culture
Suitable for Pre-Intermediate to Advanced level students, these courses are a hands-on approach to learning English in a practical and fun way. In interesting and stimulating lessons, you will practise grammar, vocabulary, listening, speaking, reading and writing whilst exploring Scottish cultural topics.
English and Culture courses are linked to the social programme so that you can prepare for the places you will visit, practise some useful language related to what you will see and get more out of your time in Scotland.
Block 1: English and History (2 – 13 July)
Learn English while you learn about Scotland’s history. In lively topical lessons, you explore the history and culture of Scotland with your qualified and experienced language teacher. This course is linked to the social programme so that you can prepare for the places you will visit, and practise some useful language related to the history of what you will see.
Block 2: English and Edinburgh highlights (16 – 27 July)
Learn English and get to know Edinburgh better. The course is intensive and you practise grammar, vocabulary and skills in the classroom which you can then use when you are out and about in Edinburgh. This course is linked to the social programme so that you can get more out of the visits to famous places in Edinburgh.
Block 3: English and Festival (30 July – 17 August)
Learn English while preparing for the festival. On this course you will find out more about the famous Edinburgh Festivals which take place in Edinburgh every August. The language you learn in class will enhance your experience of the festival and help you to get more out of attending the cultural events. Please note that this course does not include entrance to ticketed festival events unless combined with the social programme.
Examination preparation
This course is for Intermediate to Advanced level students who want to prepare for English language exams such as IELTS and FCE. Your qualified and experienced language teacher will work with you to identify areas of weakness and will provide practice which is appropriate and relevant to your language needs. You may be working in small groups or individually depending on the shared needs of the group. All materials are tailored to your needs and provided in class.
It is possible to take English language exams in Edinburgh but you are advised to book early as places are limited. You will need to book the exam separately at a local exam centre. Follow this link for more information about exam centres in Edinburgh.
