The International Foundation Programme runs for one academic year and prepares students for an undergraduate degree at a Scottish university, starting the following autumn. The Programme will also allow entrance to some universities in England and Wales. In the past 3 years, students have progressed to a wide range of universities including The University of Edinburgh, University of Glasgow, The University of Aberdeen, The University of Sheffield, University College London, The University of Manchester, Durham University and others.
To be eligible for the programme, you need to have a good General Certificate of Education from your school and evidence of English language at minimum IELTS 5.5 or equivalent e.g. TOEFL.
The International Foundation Programme usually includes 4 academic subjects at SQA Higher level (e.g. Maths, Business Management, History etc.) as listed below. You will be advised on your choice of subjects by the Course Director according to your intended university degree and your study to date.
Included in the fee is:
- Airport pick up service on arrival
- Induction programme (college/ city orientation)
- Tuition
- Course material (excluding textbooks)
- English language support, if required
- Library facilities including internet and email access
- SQA exam registration fee
- Access to clubs, societies and open day events
International Foundation students usually study for 4 Highers or a combination of Highers and Advanced Highers. Subjects available for Highers or Advanced Highers include:

** These subjects require a higher level of English (IELTS 6.5).
If your first language is not English, then one of the 4 Highers will usually be Higher ESOL (English for speakers of Other Languages). Our programmes and teaching methods are designed to support the transition from school to university and will provide you with a bridge to university in the UK. Before applying it is important for you to investigate entry requirements to your chosen university degree directly with your preferred universities as soon as possible.
