Part-Time Work

At Stevenson College Edinburgh we appreciate that many students hope to find part-time work during their studies.  Edinburgh is a major tourist destination and therefore many students find work in industries relating to tourism, for example working in hotels, cafes, restaurants and shops.

The International Student Adviser can assist in giving advice on finding employment on both a part-time basis during study and on Post Study Work.  The College also has a careers advisor with whom you can make an appointment to discuss your career plans.

In order to help students find part time work, the International Centre runs a number of events including seminars on Employment Rights for Part-time workers and Interview Skills.

You will also find jobs advertised on the General Notice Boards on the ground floor and outside the College library on the 2nd Floor.  You can also register with Jobcentre Plus, a national employment service by calling 0845 6060 234.

As an international student, you are entitled to work part time during term time. However, you may find it difficult to work as well as study full time. Please check with the UK Border Agency as there will be restrictions on the hours you can work depending on your student visa status.

There is a minimum wage which is set by the Government and which any employer must pay you.

From 1st October 2009, an employer must pay you as follows:

  • aged 16 – 17 years:  £3.57 per hour
  • aged 18 - 21 years:  £4.83 per hour
  • Over 22 years:  £5.80 per hour

Please note that if your visa contains the following: “no work or recourse to public funds” or “does not enter employment paid or unpaid and does not engage in any business or profession” please contact the International Centre about whether to apply for the stamp to be changed.

If you wish to work during your studies at SCE or as part of Post Study Work you will need to obtain a National Insurance (NI) Number. In order to get your NI number, you must call the local Jobcentre Plus on 0845 6000 643 to make an appointment to work in the UK.  You do not need to be in employment at this stage.
