Course Overview

The Foundation Photography course will give students a basic understanding of how an image is formed in the camera, exposure control and aspects of picture composition. You will gain an understanding of monochrome film material and gain the basic skills of film processing and printing.

Objectives

Lectures will focus on building knowledge in image formation, exposure, depth of field and composition. The objective of the course is to complete 6 practical assignments which are set in consultation with the individual student.

Course Content

The content covered in the course includes:

  • Instruction of how to use 35mm film cameras including an introduction to shutter speeds and apertures.
  • What the factors that affect exposure are.
  • Instruction of Instruction on how to process black and white film including a description of the dark room and how to produce prints from a negative.
  • Intruction on basic photographic techniques including advice on compositions and how to improve images.
  • How to make and enlarge black and white prints.

Assessment

6 images are to be printed to a satisfactory standard
