The two case studies below will give you an idea of what previous HNC Social Care students thought about the course.
Fiona Howie (Full-time HNC Social Care)
"I was 23 when I started the full-time HNC in Social Care. Doing the HNC in Social Care at Stevenson was the most positive experience I had in education to date. This was due to the support available and interesting curriculum. I feel that the course has made me more open minded and passionate about working with service users, and gave me an introduction to theory for practice.
Completing the HNC has enabled me to go to University where I am currently studying for an Honours degree in Social Work. I am also working in a youth Café as a Youth Worker, and work on the locum bureau for Residential Child Care Officers for The City of Edinburgh Council. Completing the HNC in Social Care at Stevenson has been one of the most positive choices I have made. I had the opportunity to experience a very rewarding placement, and it has enabled me to go to University."
Derek Haining (Part-time HNC Social Care)
"I left school at the first opportunity with no qualifications. I then went in to work as an engineer for about 27 years and was made redundant. As there were few engineering jobs I thought it was time to train for something new and went to a local care home and spoke to the person in charge. I now wish I had done this sooner as I get a lot of satisfaction from my job now.
I was 49 when I started my HNC. On the HNC Social Care I learned a lot about why people are the way that they are, the things that influence our lives and what makes us the people we are.
I was working full-time in a home for older people when I started the course and since doing my HNC I have been given an Assistant Managers post in my workplace.
The HNC course is enjoyable and you will learn a lot about yourself. It will give you a better understanding of people. You will get to meet new friends and will get a lot of support from classmates and lecturers. It is not all work, you do have a laugh."
