What is the HNC Social Care?
The HNC Social Care is a nine month course in Social Care theory and Practice which aims to provide students with a foundation for safe, person-centred Social Care practice.
Student placements are absolutely central to this as they provide the main context for applying theory and developing communication and team working skills.
The course is generic so students are placed in all sectors of Social Care including: services for older people, young people, people with disabilities, and people with mental health problems.
In some social care jobs the Scottish Social Services Council (SSSC) now requires an HNC Social Care for registration.
Who are HNC Social Care Students?
Our students range in age from 18 to 65 and are male and female. Some have come from other careers and are looking for a new direction, while others have lots of experience from life and voluntary work. They are carefully selected through our interview process and many go on to work for organisations where they have completed their placement.
How long is the placement?
Full-time students have to complete 60 days of placement. They start at the end of September and finish up by the end of May. They are at placement two days a week but they also get the chance to have periods of block placement at several points in the year.
What would we have to do?
All students must have an allocated supervisor from your organisation who meets with them regularly for formal supervision; a record must always be kept of these meetings.
The students will also need lots of support to identify pieces of work to do and individual service users who they can work with.
Students may ask supervisors for feedback about specific assignments, particularly relating to assessment and care planning.
Supervisors will be asked for verbal feedback throughout the year and will be asked for some written feedback for the student to use their SCQ portfolio. All HNC students must complete the four coreSVQ3 units while they are on placement.
What support will our organisation get?
All students will have an enhanced disclosure completed before they start their placement.
All students will have a College Tutor and a College SVQ Assessor who will be in regular contact with supervisors to offer support and get feedback about the progress of students.
College staff will come out to visit students and their supervisors at the beginning of the placement and the SVQ Assessor will return to do observations at various points in the year. Additional visits and meetings will always be arranged if necessary.
